The difficulties we experience in life are often linked to how we’ve been treated by other people. We may have been squashed down, judged or expected to be certain things or to behave in certain ways in order to receive approval, love and validation. As a person-centred therapist, I aim to create a therapeutic relationship that will counteract this: one in which you feel heard, valued and free to figure out who you are, what you need and how you want to live your life.
During therapy, I centre your voice and focus on really trying to understand how you see yourself and your problems. I avoid imposing my own ideas or theoretical formulations on you, because I want to give you the space to develop and tap into your own internal sense of what is right for you. This approach supports you to understand yourself and to find your own solutions — during therapy and after therapy has ended. I find it also results in me genuinely respecting and caring about my clients, because I approach each person from a basis of trust and openness to their way of seeing things. I hope that this respect and care will support you to develop greater self-compassion and to value yourself more. When you feel better about yourself, it’s easier to find a way forward — especially when you’ve gained greater insight into your problems through therapy. |
